Oil on Canvas, titled on front and labeled on verso “Lily Tolpo” (1917-2015)
Born in a Chinese/Polish family of Chicago, Lily was known in preschool as “The little artist”. She trained at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, 1935-1939, and was an accomplished violinist. Tolpo additionally sculpted in bronze and resin, most importantly the US Senate debate between Abraham Lincoln and Steven A. Douglas of 1858. This monumental bronze is permanently situated in Freeport, Illinois, the original debate site. Tolpo’s mural depicted here, done in 1983, is a departure from her normal portraits and cityscapes.
