Ohio born, Miller was a self-taught painter who experienced early tutelage under George C. Bingham. The majority of his life was spent along the coast of California, with excursions into the mountains and deserts of Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. This strong painting has a definite illustrative quality to it.
