This dramatic Austrian winter scene was found in a New York City apartment. The artist has not been identified but the frame bears the label of the important upper east side frame shop of D.Matt. David Matt, a Swiss emigre founded the company in 1920 and made frames for the American Indian paintings that hang in the rotunda of the Capitol in Washington. Later the brothers took over the business and their clients include top decorators, museums and wealthy private collectors, who do not mind spending several thousand dollars for a handmade picture frame that can take eight hours to carve, two hours to gild with 23-carat gold and two more hours to polish.
32-1/2″ x 38-1/2″ in original polished gilt frame, c. 1930-40.
