The Dead Artists Gallery presents “The Flowering of Ingres”

Collage on Canvas

Signed on stretcher, verso “H. (Harold “Hal” James) McWhinnie”

Chicago artist known for abstract floral arrangements, this painting includes vignettes by the artist Ingres behind cellophane panels. (Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, 1780-1867)

McWhinnie was art education faculty at the University of Maryland Education Department. After earning his BA at Pennsylvania State and his MFA from the Chicago Institute and finally his Ed.D from Stanford, McWhinnie settled into his teaching. Although his media of choice was ceramics, having shown worldwide both solo and as a part of juried group exhibitions, McWhinnie began experimenting with media in the 1980s. First with computer art and and iteration and then moving back to the more traditional media of painting, this piece serves to show the amazing breadth of a world reknowned ceramicist who pioneered ideas in glaze formulation.
