The Dead Artists Gallery presents “Into the Wild”

O/Masonite

Signed L/L “Naomi Lorne” and additionally signed with Brooklyn Museum exhibition label bearing artist’s title.

Lorne was a New York Expressionist who used a rich but somber color palette applied with the spatula.  This particular painting exhibits her interest in medium specificity- that is the idea that art should be concerned with the material realities of its media. In other words, painting should be about exploring the limits of paint as a material and the limits of the procedure by which we paint. Using the spatula allows Lorne to emphasis the viscosity of the paint she’s using, which is further reinforced by the dark colors, drawing attention to the texture rather than the forms.

 30 x 26 in original gold- and silver-leafed frame, c.1950
