 German-American California plein aire artist of the first half of the 20th century, interested in botanicals of the High Sierras. Smooth brush strokes and the full spectrum of color, from the dark browns of the fore to the ochre of mid and finally the cool blues of the mountains, endow this piece with a calm, yet dynamic energy which lends itself to various hangings. The idealized, naturalistic style, depth of field and gradient of color are a welcoming encounter from afar, where as the tightly blended brushstrokes and medium size encourage the viewer to come in close.
