Vance was a mid-century painter of florals and still lifes. She was an Atlanta native. The composition of this painting is guided by color, rather than form or line, which is indebted to the Romantic movement of the 19th century. Those artists allowed the relationships of colors, rather than sketching lines or forms in order to mediate spatial relationships.
