The Dead Artists Gallery presents “Three Small Barbizon Paintings: Harbor Scene 1”

O/Mahogany Panel

Signed L/R “G. H. (George Hendrik) Breitner” (1857-1923) and again in label attached to verso

Breitner belonged to the Hague School of Realists. He specialized in city-scapes and harbor-scapes with occasional character studies. The Hague School gave birth to the generation of artists from which Van Gogh would learn to paint. Specializing in muted tones, the Hague School painters sought not to represent reality faithfully, but rather to represent the effect reality had on them, and communicate that to the viewer.

 10″ x 18″ in mid-century European frame
