Signed L/L “Hugo Kreyssig” (1872-1939). Additionally signed and inscribed on canvas, verso.
Kreyssig was a landscape and cityscape artist with a studio in Munich. He was inspired by the texture of the Impressionists, especially the tertiary, American style which doubled down on heavy brushstrokes coming out of the Van Gogh lineage rather than the wispiness derived from the Monet branch. Kreyssig often deployed the palette knife to streak different pigments through each other while maintaining their texture. This is particularly evident in the road, where the wagon ruts and shadows are intertwined with the sandy ground.
