Breitner eventually became interested in using photography to capture the movement of rain and water, and used it as a reference material when painting. In 1882, Breitner sketched with unknown Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh, and introduced the him to the novels of Emile Zola, which would become instrumental in the art historical trajectory of social realism.
