This mid-century Louisiana/New Orleans painting captures the shy excitement of a young woman preparing for Zydeco. Despite the shallow pictorial plane and the flattened style prescripted by haute painting in the 1980s, this piece nevertheless creates an incredible illusion of depth by taking advantage of the mirror. The young woman peers outwardly at the viewer just as we peer into the mirror and the room behind her, and behind us. Its large size, almost three feet tall, reinforces the play of space.
