The Dead Artists Gallery presents “Bowl of Fruit”

Ukrainian Genius: “ Still Life, Bowl of Fruit,” signed L/L “Ben Benn”(1884-1983.) Pioneer Modernist with excursions into Cubism and Abstract Expressionism, Benn was born in southwest Ukraine as a Jew under the Czarist Alexander III. He migrated with his family to the United States in 1898, and between 1904 and 1908 attended The National Academy of Design. Participating in the Forum Exhibition(1916) and the first annual Society of Independent Artists Exhibition (1917), he depicted urban scenes which, unlike the Social Realists, were more an affirmation than a critical commentary on the human condition. During the 1930’s his use of shallow space filled with flattened geometric forms springing from the contemporary European aesthetic projected him into the center of the Modernists movement, where he remained for the next 50 years. With many solo exhibitions during his lifetime, his works are now found in many museums and private collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney and the Hirshhorn.
