Student of George Henry Smillie (1840-1921), DeHaven was described as “ an intense Barbizon artist with a Tonalist sensibility.” Focusing on rural New England and Atlantic scenes, especially around East Hampton, Dehaven was a member of the national Academy of Design, the ANA 1902, the NA 1920, the Salmagundi Club 1899 and the National Arts Club among many other honors.
