This skillfully executed study of a boat under sail by the English plein-air artist Coombs, was done on a gray November morning while on a European tour. An American nationalist, Coombs is combining the historical importance of boats to the plein aire tradition with her own mimetic style, eschewing the non-determinacy of the High Impressionists.
19 1/2 x 14 1/2 in original carved and bronzed frame, c.1900-1910
