Oil on canvas signed and dated lower right “Jos. Relinger, Dec. 1891.” This Philadelphia genre artist (1852-1918) leaves very little evidence of his ability, and none of his training or background. However, his treatment of the crashing waves in this painting suggests a familiarity with the Japanese master of the wave-painters Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). The skill of linear perspective, using oblique angles, contrasts of near and far, and contrast of man-made versus nature are all employed in this painting. The large wave in the midfield dwarfing the ship between the powerful waves would make Hokusai proud! 30″ x 40″ in original water-gilt frame, $795. Unique… and dramatic!
