What is griselle art technique?
“Grisaille” is a French term, literally translating to “grayness”. In the art world, it describes a monochromatic painting technique where an artist uses varying shades of gray to create a composition that exudes depth and a three-dimensional feel. This particular piece, oil on Masonite, is a bit unusual because a) it is Scottish rather than French and b) the two midfield farmhouse roofs in russet keep this from being totally gray. 21 x 34 in original painted cove frame and signed/dated lower left “T.F.Roberts,’56.” $795.
